An Obese Person Is Merely A Person Who Eats Too Much - By: Donald Saunders, Posted on: 2007-09-12

If you Are one of those individuals who believe that there is simply no excuse for someone being overweight and that an obese person is just somebody who eats too much food and does not get enough exercise, then think again. Although it is certainly the case that overeating together with an inactive lifestyle can lead to obesity, it is assuredly not the only cause.

Despite the fact that not well understood at the moment, there is believed to be a genetic factor that pre-disposes some individuals to obesity. For example, some forms of the genes which control such things as appetite and metabolism are thought to contribute to obesity when they are found in combination with specific environmental conditions.

In addition, there are a number of genetic disorders which can lead to obesity. For example, Prader-Willi syndrome which is named after Andrea Prader and Heinrich Willi and was first described in 1956, is a genetic disorder in which, in addition to other things, people have a voracious appetite and build up excessive fat, particularly within the central area of the body.

Illness may also result in weight gain and obesity. Possibly the best know, but certainly not the only, illness that often leads to obesity is hypothyroidism, in which the thyroid produces insufficient thyroid hormone. In spite of the fact that the disorder itself produces only relatively mild weight gain, alongside suitable environmental conditions, this can very easily turn into a very substantial gain in weight.

Certain Medicines can also result in a rise in weight. The list of drugs that can lead to weight gain is very long but one particular class of drugs that is causing concern and attracted the attention of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a class of atypical antipsychotics that can have a marked affect on the metabolism.

There are also several specific eating disorders that will lead to obesity, like binge eating disorder. This is a psychiatric disorder (that is also an element of the condition of bulimia nervosa) in which, as its name implies, individuals are not able to control their eating and often intersperse binge eating into what is otherwise a normal pattern of eating.

Certain diets can also result in obesity without the person realizing that it is the diet that is the cause of the problem. In other words this is not a case of just eating too much, but of eating the wrong type of food. In some individuals for example certain foods will result in an abnormally high blood suger level for a short time immediately after eating.

Slimming may also produce obesity. The fact of the matter is that many diets fail and we are seeing a growing number of individuals who spend a large period of their lives moving from one diet to another in the hope of losing weight. What actually happens here is that they frequently lose weight while they are on a diet and then put it back on again, normally with a little bit extra, every time they stop dieting. As they come on and off numerous diets their weight will cycle up and down, but the underlying trend is for their weight to rise over time, eventually resulting in obesity.

These are merely a few of the causes of obesity, other than simple overeating and insufficient exercise, and a number of these are either outside of the control of the individuals concerned or their ability to take control of the situation is very limited.

So, the next time you see an obese person you may be correct in assuming that they have caused their own problem, but you may equally be wrong in jumping to this conclusion.
