How To Buy A Cheap Car: 7 Tips The Trade Doesn't Want You To Know - By: Mark Stephens, Posted on: 2007-08-08

Buying a cheap new car isn't as difficult as your local car dealer might want you to think - all you need is to know a few simple facts and you will be able to get the kind of deals that you hear other people talking about, but never seem to get yourself.

What you really need is some 'insider information'. Someone in the know, who's going to tell you just where the bargains are, and how to get them. Now a former dealer with 23 years of experience breaks the code of silence, and tells you how to save a fortune the next time you want to buy a car.

There isn't really a bad time to buy a car, you can always get a deal to some degree - but there is definitely a good time, In the last week of March, June, September and December manufacturers are under pressure to register cars to try to become the best seller in their sector, so they give extra discount to the dealers (often double their normal levels), who will pass it on to you!

You can also cash in on the salesman's ego to get a bargain. One of their 'perks' is a company car, which is often a higher spec than standard. Most salesmen wants the latest 'plate, but they have to sell their car first, so when the new plate is out, or the model changes, they'' often sell their own car for little or no profit just to change their own car.

You can also save a good chunk of cash by buying a pre-registered car. These cars are registered by dealers to meet manufacturers targets. They are usually given huge bonus payments for every car that they register in their own name - it's usually hundreds and even thousands of pounds. When the dealer gives that money to you, you can be sure that you're getting a real bargain.

You can save money when you use the dealers finance. Most dealers will go out of their way to undercut the banks in order to make their offer look better, so make sure that you've done your homework. As well as the millions of leaflets that are stuck inside every magazine you buy, all banks have leaflets on display with their rates for you to compare. Find the cheapest, then ask the dealer to beat it - if he can't use the bank, but take my word for it, he'll beat them 95% of the time.

Few people realise that dealers actually need your part exchange vehicle, because if everyone came in without a car - they wouldn't have any used cars to sell. Just before you take your car to a dealer, invest 10 in one of these hand car washes that will also hoover your car out and clean the dashboard. Stick an air freshener in too, and you'll be presenting you're car as 'ready to sell' and the price that you'll be offered will certainly be higher than normal. Few people ever think of cleaning their car before they ask for a price, but those that do always get top money!

Don't just stick to new cars either. You can save a fortune buying something that is six months old with four or five thousand miles on the clock. There's an entire industry built around this - it's called remarketing. Essentially, the giant rental companies like Hertz and Avis sell their six month old cars to dealers through either existing ties or 'closed auctions'. These cars are cheap because of the huge discount they get from car manufacturers for buying in bulk - sometimes thousands of cars at a time. They run them for a short while, then sell them at a profit to dealers, and it's here that you can save really big money, because these cars really are as good as new, with long manufacturers warranties and in tip top condition.
