They're All Around Us: A Ceramic Products Tour - By: Cindy Anderson, Posted on: 2007-08-21

A boring subject for an article? Not at all, not at all. In fact, the world of ceramics is an interesting one, and ceramic products are all around us, filling our world. Come, let's take a tour (a short one, I promise you) and see ceramics all around us.

The first stop on our tour: the garage. Let's take a good look at the family car, truck or SUV that's parked there. You may not realize it, but every time you hit the brakes you may be using ceramics - as many vehicles use ceramic brake pads instead of the older asbestos- based types. They give reliable stopping power in all types of braking situations, keeping you and your family safe.

Now that we've been to the garage, let's leave there and go into the house. Let's go up to the bathroom. There we will find ceramic tile on the floor, and in the shower stall. You might just even find some on a kitchen countertop or on the floor in a hallway. Both beautiful and functional, it can even increase the value of your home.

Hey, I'm hungry - so let's go back into the kitchen. What to we see there? Well, perhaps a ceramic coffee carafe, or ceramic teapot, or ceramic tea strainer, right next to the ceramic cups and dishes.

Let's leave the indoors for a moment, and take a trip outside. Let's go over to the garden, and what do we find there? Delightful objects like ceramic bird baths, ceramic garden stools, garden pixies and gnomes, all made out of ceramic materials.

While we are outside, let's go to the front of the house. What's there? Ceramic house numbers, sometimes incorporating even the street name and family last name, proudly displayed. And there's spot in his doghouse. What's that I see beside him? Well, I'll be doggoned - it's a ceramic dog bowl!

Well, we're finished around the house. Now, let's head off to work. All types of businesses and industries have used ceramics. Piezo electric elements are incorporated in computers, medical equipment, furnaces, watches - even your backyard grill. And ceramic ball bearings help devices as diverse as truck wheels, jet airplanes and roller skates function better.

Yes, it's true, I think: Ceramic products can be found all around us, filling our world. Where would we be without them? Much poorer off, I think.
