Tips to find the best location for your Florence holiday - By: Andrew Colt, Posted on: 2007-08-29

Discovering the best place to stay in Florence is not a hard job: there are a lot of good-looking areas and every location has its personal benefits. I'll describe some beautiful areas, so that you can select the one fitting your flavour!

Accommodation near Dome of Florence

This is the ancient centre of Florence. Piazza del Duomo is the religious heart of Florence (as opposed to the spiritual side represented by Piazza della Signoria). The Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore is almost certainly the most known architectural masterpiece in Florence and was realized by Filippo Brunelleschi. The Bell Tower made by Giotto is dressed in attractive red, white and green marbles.

Advantages - An active location full of fashion shops, bars and restaurants, offers the ideal accommodation for those wishing to spend their time fully immerged in the historical centre of Florence.

Florence hotels near Station

Santa Maria Novella Station (Firenze SMN) is the main train station in Florence, right in the city centre. The complex was designed in the early 1930's to resemble the shape of Fascio Littorio, the symbol of Mussolini's Fascism. Florence station is one of the key works of Italian Rationalism movement: the modern building merges with the classic look given by the pietra forte on the stone facade.

Plus - A strategical area whether you travel by train and wish to tour Florence historical centre (the station is very close to the Duomo), as for excursions in Tuscany and Chianti countryside, by train or by Sita and Lazzi busses (in front of the station).

Florence hotels near the banks of the river Arno

The Arno river, originating on Mount Falterona in the Apennines, crosses Florence, where it passes historical bridges as the Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge in Florence to survive to World War II, now staging the famous artisan goldsmiths workshops. The Arno river flooded this city in historical times, the last occasion being the famous flood of 1966.

Advantages - You're in a quiet location that offers some of the most romantic views of the ancient part of Florence.

Florence hotels near the hills surrounding Florence (Fiesole)

The hills surrounding Florence offer a privileged point of view on this marvellous city. Fiesole, with its IX century b.C foundation, still shows ancient Etruscan ruins and features the most spectacular view of Florence.

Advantages - the ideal place for nature lovers, you can enjoy at the same time Florence historical centre and Tuscany countryside.
